Description:

These pistols from the famous LePage firm in Paris were manufactured under Jean Andre Prosper Henry LePage (1792-1854) in 1836, the year after he was nominated as Arquebusier Ordinarie of the King, of the Duke of Orleans, and the Duke of Nemours. The browned rifled Damascus barrels have "LEPAGE ARQER. DU ROI." in gold in decorative etched panels, dovetailed blade front sights, and platinum banded breech casehardened plugs with pierced platinum plugs. The underside of the barrels have "A. 1836" and "N 3575." The serial numbers are repeated on the breech plug hooks, standing breeches, and stocks. The casehardened back action locks have scroll and border engraving, burst patterns on the hammers, and "LEPAGE A PARIS" signed behind the hammers. The casehardened spurred trigger guards enclose adjustable single set triggers, and the furniture is primarily casehardened and engraved en suite with the locks. The well-figured walnut half-length stocks have raised shell carving at the forend tips, silver wedge escutcheons, checkered butts with scalloped borders, and contrasting dark horn pommel rings with fine floral relief carving. The rosewood case has "EB" inscribed on the lid escutcheon, royal purple velvet and leather lining with gilt borders, and a suite of loading and maintenance accessories (some replaced).

Rating Definition:

Very fine with 85% plus original case colors, bright original gold, crisp engraving and markings, brown and traces of blue along with distinct twist patterns on the barrel, some light oxidation, and mild wear overall. The stock is fine with crisp carving, checkering, scattered mild dents and scratches particularly on the forend and left flat, and some nice figure. Mechanically excellent. The case and accessories are also generally very good with mild age and storage related wear, including a crack across the lid.
