Description:

"Wm LIEBIG No 1 PRESIDENT St BALTIMORE" marked on the top barrel flat at the breech. No information was found related to this maker at the current time. Air guns of this style were used primarily for indoor gallery target shooting as produced during the Civil War era. This gallery air gun has a swiveling octagon barrel that loads from the breech, and it functions through the use of a trigger guard lever for cocking in order to fill the cylinder reservoir, and upon pulling the trigger the spring loaded piston releases. Dovetail mounted blade front sight and adjustable notch rear sight. Features floral scroll pattern engraving on top of the cylinder, receiver, trigger guard and buttplate. Chambered in approximately .30 caliber/7.5 mm with a smooth bore. Circular brass collection tag marked "R.D. BEEMAN/PRIVATE/COLLECTION/2078" hanging from the lever. A few screws are absent on the brass receiver. Provenance: The Dr. Robert D. Beeman Collection

Rating Definition:

Very good, retains half of the period applied brown finish with a few scattered patches of light pitting visible on the iron surfaces, attractive golden aged patina on the brass, and defined engraving and barrel markings. The wood is also very good with a few scattered scratches, a few chips and cracks, and otherwise defined edges. Retains spring pressure but does not properly remain cocked, mechanically needs work.
