Civil War U.S. Spencer Model 1860 Repeating Saddle Ring Carbine

Around 50,000 of these carbines were manufactured between 1863 and 1865 for the Union Army. Spencer carbines are easily one of the most advanced and popular weapons of the war and remained important in the Indian Wars of the latter half of the 19th century, especially prior to the widespread adoption of the Springfield trapdoor. This example has a period applied tin plating with otherwise standard markings and features including its original six-groove rifling and has not been altered with a Stabler cutoff.

ConditionFine, retains 80% of the period applied tin plating with some scattered flaking and smooth brown and gray patina on the balance, and slightly faded receiver markings on top of the breech. The wood is very good as sanded and revarnished, with surface cracking of the outer finish, scattered mild dings and scratches, a crack on the right rear of the forend and cracks on either side ahead of the buttplate. Mechanically fine.
