Description:

Manufactured in 1887 as a Third Model with integral dust cover rail and dust cover with serrations at the rear. The rifle is chambered in desirable .22 Short caliber. Winchester only manufactured approximately 19,552 Model 1873s in .22 short or .22 long between 1884 and 1904. This is certainly a well above average condition of the .22 rimfire version of "The Gun that Won the West." The round barrel is fitted with a dovetail German silver blade front sight and an elevation adjustable rear sight. The top of the barrel is stamped with the two-line address/patent dates marking ahead of the rear sight and "22 SHORT" at the breech. The cartridge elevator is marked "22 CAL/SHORT." The upper tang is marked "MODEL 1873." The lower tang has the serial number. It is mounted with a smooth forearm and straight grip stock with a crescent buttplate.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The barrel and magazine tube retains 60% original blue finish and the receiver and forend cap retain 70% plus original blue finish with thinning to brown on the balance. The sideplates are both refinished, most likely in the period. 30% of the original case colors remain on the hammer, lever and buttplate. The reoiled wood is also fine with some minor dings and scratches. Mechanically excellent.
