Description:

Manufactured in 1878, the larger caliber Model 1876 was popular among those in the West who believed .44-40 wasn't quite enough stopping power for whatever they might encounter. This example is a Second Model with dust cover guide retained by two screws and a dust cover with checkered "thumbprint" grip. The octagon barrel is marked with the two-line Winchester address/King's patent marking. The barrel appears to have been shortened 1/2 inch from its original special order length, and the magazine appears shortened to match. The rifle correctly lacks caliber markings, as the only caliber initially offered for the Model 1876 was .45-75 W.C.F. The upper tang is marked with the model designation, and the serial number is on the lower tang. The left side of the lower tang is marked "47" and "3159", with "3159" repeated in the stock inlet and inside the buttplate. It is fitted with a German silver blade front sight, "1876" marked folding ladder rear sight, a peep sight mounted on the upper tang, and a special order set trigger. It is mounted with a replacement deluxe pattern checkered forearm and straight grip stock with a trapdoor crescent buttplate (cleaning rod not included).

Rating Definition:

Fine, retains 40% of the original blue finish, traces of the original case colors, and 25% of the original nitre blue on the loading gate with the balance having thinned to either a plum brown or grey patina and some scattered small patches of old, dark oxidation. The barrel and magazine have been shortened (see above). The wood is also fine with the forearm a period replacement and some scattered minor dings and scratches throughout. Mechanically excellent.
