Revolutionary War Era "US" Surcharged Maryland Committee of Safety Attributed Flintlock Musket

Brown Bess Maryland Committee of Safety attributed muskets were assembled using imported locks and barrels. Features brass furniture similar to a British Brown Bess musket, a 42 inch barrel, and a wrist escutcheon secured by a wood screw, which is considered a distinguishing feature of these early Maryland-attributed muskets. Raised letters "ICI" in a sunken rectangle on the lock between the frizzen spring, with a "US" (measures approximately 1/4" in height, possibly stamped in the post-Revolutionary War era) stamped on top of the breech and a mark resembling an inverted "V" within the arms of a larger "V" stamped at the left quarter of the breech, and a "D" stamped in the stock behind the trigger guard tang. Information on these Maryland Committee of Safety muskets can be found on pages 114-116 of the book "American Military Shoulder Arms Volume I" by George D. Moller, pages 110-111 of the book "The History of Weapons of the American Revolution" by George C. Neumann, and page 161 of the book "Muskets of the Revolution" by Bill Ahearn.

ConditionVery good plus, exhibiting smooth brown patina with some scattered light surface corrosion, and defined markings. One of the screw heads on the buttplate is deformed. The brass fittings exhibit an attractive golden aged patina. Stock is fine with defined edges, some scattered light dents and scratches, a crack ahead of the rear lock screw, a hairline crack between the lock and barrel tang, a few small minor cracks and some chips around the buttplate, and a few discreet filled in areas. Mechanically fine.
