Description:

Manufactured prior to World War II, the Second Issue Navy retains the 1906 pattern grip safety but standardizes the safety lever configuration to match the pistols ordered for army use. 1906 Navy Lugers in either configuration are rare to see in fine original condition, due to the harshness of service at sea both in peace and at wartime. Blade front and two position notch rear sights, with the standardized "GESICHERT" marking on the upper safety position, blank chamber and "DWM" marked toggle. "Crown" proofs are present on the left side of the barrel, receiver and breech block, and "crown/M" stamps are present once on the underside of the barrel, twice on the left side of the receiver, and on the wood magazine base. On the backstrap, between the stock lug and grip safety, is the Wilhelmshaven naval inventory mark "W.W./6758" Sometime after original service use the pistol passed through the London proofhouse, receiving a "scimitar/NP" nitro proof, caliber and tonnage markings on the underside of the barrel and a series of "crown/GP" proofs on the extension, frame and toggle train. Still later, an import mark from Simpson Limited of Galesburg, Illinois, was added to the magazine well. The magazine is mixed numbered and the grips are unnumbered, with all other visible numbers matching. Included with the pistol is a hardwood shoulder stock, lack leather flap holster, takedown tool and shoulder straps. The lowest serial number noted, per Dr. Sturgess, to have been manufactured with the "down-safe" safety lever, showing "GESICHERT" in the upper position. Can be seen on pages 573, 880, 901-904 and 1118 of "The Borchardt and Luger Automatic Pistols" by Gortz and Sturgess, and is attributed to the collection of noted author and collector Dr. Geoffrey Sturgess. Provenance: The Doctor Geoffery Sturgess Collection; Property of a Gentleman

Rating Definition:

Excellent, with 95% plus original high polish blue finish, showing minor spotting on the gripstraps, bright edge wear, and light handling marks. 90% plus bright original straw color and 60% plus niter blue is present on the small parts, and the grips are excellent with a few light dings. The holster is fine, with mild scuffing and fatigue marks, and the stock shows mild dings and scratches. Mechanically excellent.
