Elaborate Engraved, Gold Accented, and Scrimshaw Inlaid Flintlock Axe Pistol

This fascinating combination weapon has very Germanic styling in its extensive staghorn and pearl inlays along the fruitwood stock/haft consisting mainly of small animals, scroll designs, and floral accents. It has a pocket pistol sized small rounded lock on the right and a small stud trigger. The barrel has floral and scroll patterns with gilt accents. The axe head has a pyramidal head with round apertures, floral engraving, and a scene of a bear on the right and a lioness on the left. A similar example is featured in the Art Institute of Chicago from the George F. Harding Collection and also has pierced designs on the blade and a dagger. It is noted as c. 1660-1680 and likely from Silesia as a collectible/curiosity. A few others are also known.

ConditionVery good with bright axe head and lock, minor chips a the edges of the head, 50% plus of the fire blue finish left on the barrel along with traces of gold, mild pitting by the vent, and general mild wear. The decorated stock/haft is very fine and has crisp designs and minor wear. Mechanically fine.
