Savage Model 1928A1 Thompson Submachine Gun Marked "TOMMY GUN", Class III/NFA C&R Registered Fully Transferable Machine Gun

This is an excellent example of an original fully automatic M1928A1 Thompson Submachine gun, as produced by the Savage Arms Corp. These Thompson SMGs were the quintessential classic submachine guns used by the early law enforcement and FBI agencies to combat the depression era "Gangland" warfare in the late 1920's all the way through WWII, Korea and even into Vietnam. They have been produced in several configurations and by several companies, most under contract by the US Army during WWII. The final war expedient version was called the "M1A1" model which exhibited many manufacturing shortcuts. This particular submachine gun is actually an early M1928 SMG that was later altered to the M1928A1 configuration, that was probably manufactured under a US Army contract by the Savage Arms Corp. This SMG still retains the earlier configuration and features of the original Colt 1928 models. This model is still fitted with the lightweight "finned" barrel to aid in cooling during firing , Cutts compensator on the front end, the vertical, forward pistol grip with side mounted sling swivel, the fully adjustable blued Lyman tangent rear sight with ear protectors on the sides and detachable buttstock. It has the wartime parkerized finish on the metal components with the oil finished stock and pistol grips. The left side of the receiver is marked "U.S. MODEL OF 1928" with the "A1" being later hand stamped next to that, over the serial number "NO. S-179295" (with the "S" designating Savage manufacture). The front left side of the receiver is stamped with a small ordnance bomb proof over the ordnance inspector's circular "GEL" proof over an unboxed "RLB" proof. Farther back on the receiver it has the later style two-line markings of "THOMPSON SUBMACHINE GUN,/CALIBRE 45 AUTOMATIC COLT CARTRIDGE". The right side of the receiver has the two-line markings of "AUTO-ORDNANCE CORPORATION" over "BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT, U.S.A." and farther back it has double row of eight lines of patent numbers. The top of the receiver is marked with the distinctive Thompson Company "Arrow Head" Trademark, in front of the rear sight over "TOMMY GUN". The gun is complete with one 20 round stick magazine.

ConditionVery fine, retains 95% arsenal refurbished gray parkerized finish with minor wear on the edges and high spots with some thinning on the right side flat of the receiver and on top where the cocking handle slides back and forth. The blued bolt retains 85% of its finish thinning on the sides from cycling. The wood is very fine with minor handling marks and light pressure dents, and a crack on the right of the forward pistol grip. Mechanically excellent. NOTE: This weapon is a National Firearms Act (NFA), fully transferable Class 3, which is registered with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, (BATFE) that is classified as a "Curios or Relic" as defined in 27 CFR, 478.11. These weapons are still subject to the provisions of 18 U.S.C. Chapter 44 and 27 CFR part 478.
