Description:

Produced expressly for commercial export to the United States of America, with the sporting goods firm of A.F. Stoeger of New York City being a primary importer, offering both standard configuration commercial Lugers and emulations of variants like the Artillery Luger. This example has been configured after the Navy Luger, with the longer barrel, fixed front sight and two position rear sight. In addition to the prominent "American Eagle" chamber stamp and the "DWM" monogrammed front toggle link, the right side of the extension is marked "A.F. STOEGER, INC/NEW YORK.", and the left side "GERMANY". The extractor and upper safety position are marked "LOADED" and "SAFE", "GERMANY" is repeated on the frame just ahead of the trigger guard, and a modern importer mark from Simpson Limited is present on the left side of the magazine well. One "crown/N" proof is externally visible on the left side of the front toggle link, with matching "commercial" pattern serial numbers on the frame, takedown lever, sideplate, and trigger. Straw and nitre blue finished small parts, with a pair of checkered grips and a nickel finished magazine with an unmarked hardwood base with concentric circle designs on the sides. Included with the lot is a copy of Stoeger's 1939 "Jubilee Issue" arms and accessories catalog, which includes a prominent listing of their imported new and refurbished Luger pistols, as well as their access to factory original hardware for installing upgraded and special order barrels. This pistol was formerly the property of noted collector and author Dr. Geoffrey L. Sturgess, and is featured on pages 759, 760, and 897 of The Borchardt & Luger Automatic Pistols by Gortz and Sturgess. Provenance: The Dr. Geoffrey L. Sturgess Collection; Property of a Gentleman

Rating Definition:

Excellent, with 97% plus original blue finish, showing some light edge wear, handling marks, and a small amount of spotting. The niter blue and straw yellow color remain 90% intact, with some wear on the grip screws. The grips are excellent, with some minor dings on the otherwise crisp checkering. The catalog is in good condition for its age, with some creasing/cracking of the cover and some folds and stains on the pages; the relevant section of the catalog is clear and legible. Mechanically excellent.
