This Model 1895 was manufactured in 1902 and has a special order 30 inch tapered octagon barrel chambered in .40-72 WCF. The .40-72 cartridge was a hold-over from the black powder era and only few Model 1895s were chambered for the cartridge. Most of those seen chambered for .40-72 are from the earlier years of production. In "The Winchester Book" renowned author George Madis commented on the rarity of the extra length barrels and .40-72 caliber chambering for this model: "Extra length barrels for the model 95 were available only for 38-72 and 40-72 rifles until 1908, when production ceased and these barrels were no longer offered. In the count of special features, it is noted that one of each 3200 rifles had special longer barrels." The rifle is fitted with a Lyman beaded blade front sight, an elevation adjustable rear sight, and a Lyman receiver sight. The top barrel flat is stamped "40-72 W.C.F." at the breech. The upper tang is marked "WINCHESTER/MODEL 1895." The serial number is on the lower tang. The left side of the receiver has the two-line Winchester legend. Mounted with a smooth forearm with an ebony tip insert and straight grip stock fitted with a crescent buttplate.

Fine, retaining 60% original blue finish with thinning to brown on the balance overall. The wood is also fine with a couple deep dings on the forearm at the receiver and minor handling marks.
