Description:

These rifles were manufactured c. 1883-1907. This example has an "E. REMINGTON & SONS. ILION. N.Y." address on the barrel, indicating it was manufactured c. 1883-1888 before the company was reorganized as Remington Arms Co. The barrel is equipped with a beaded blade front sight and an elevation adjustable rear sight. The caliber designation "38" is marked on the bottom of the barrel ahead of the forearm. "HEPBURNS PAT./OCT. 7TH 1879." marked on the left of the casehardened frame. Matching serial number "4509" is marked on the underside of the barrel, rear of the forearm, lower tang, and buttplate. The front surface of the stock is marked with the number "4508", possibly a factory error as it is one digit off from the serial number. Mounted with a smooth walnut forearm with casehardened tip and checkered round knob pistol grip stock with casehardened buttplate.

Rating Definition:

Exceptionally fine. The barrel retains 90% plus bright original polished blue finish. The receiver retains 80% vivid original case colors. 30% faded original case colors remain on the forend tip and buttplate. The trigger, hammer, and breechblock retain 90% original nitre blue. The buttstock has been repaired in the grip area, otherwise the wood is fine with minor dings and scratches and overall crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent. A highly attractive Remington-Hepburn No. 3 sporting rifle.
