Description:

Scarce J.P. Sauer & Son drilling issued to Luftwaffe air crews in the Middle East as a survival weapon. The drilling has blued barrels, casehardened receiver and trigger guard, and oil finished walnut stock with checkered forearm and pistol grip. The drilling has 28 inch, 12 gauge shotgun barrels and a rifle barrel chambered for the 9.3X74 R cartridge. The shotgun barrels have a matted rib with a folding rifle sight that is automatically raised when the barrel selector is moved to the rifle barrel. The drilling has a set trigger for the rifle barrel. The safety lever is located on the left stock flat. The stock and the rifle underbarrel are fitted with sling swivels. The stock has a European style cheekpiece, casehardened pistol grip cap, and checkered black plastic buttplate. The right shotgun barrel has a large Luftwaffe eagle/swastika insignia just ahead of the breech. A Luftwaffe acceptance stamp is located on the bottom of the barrel lug. "Eagle/N" proofmarks are stamped on the bottom of the rifle barrel, both shotgun barrels, and on the right receiver rail. The serial number is located on the receiver tang, left receiver rail, and on the bottom of the rifle barrel. A partial serial number is stamped on the inside of the forend. All of the serial numbers match. The rifle barrel is dated "3-42" below a Sauer proofmark. The shotgun barrels and the rifle barrel are marked "KRUPP-LAUFSTAHL". J.P. Sauer markings are present on the breeches of the shotgun barrels and the sides of the receiver. The Sauer "SuS" logo is present on the bottom of the receiver, on the chamber of the rifle barrel, and on the right receiver rail. The receiver and breech are decorated with delicate scroll engraving. The drilling does not have the aluminum case and accessories originally issued with each gun. The barrel rib has been drilled and tapped for a scope and appears to have been shortened slightly. The checkered black plastic buttplate is a replacement and is marked "BISHOP" in a ribbon.

Rating Definition:

Near excellent (with exception noted below). The barrels retain nearly 98% of the original blue finish. The bores are bright. About 90% of the original casehardening colors are present. The casehardened finish on the receiver has vivid colors. The casehardened colors on the upper and lower tangs and the forend show moderate handling and have a silver patina. The barrel and receiver markings and engraving are crisp. The stock and forend have been refinished. The Luftwaffe eagle/swastika insignia that is prominent on the right side of the stock of most Luftwaffe drillings has been removed. The buttplate is expertly fitted. This is a very attractive example of a scare Luftwaffe survival drilling with post war modifications.
