Three Fine Hopi Kachinas

Kachinas are the dancers representing the individual "Gods" of the Hopi Indians, mostly in Arizona. They can be animals, natural forces, clowns and many others figures, many not obvious to non-Hopis. 1) 17-1/4 inch Bear Kachina with fur, leather beads, feathers and sea shells. The large wooden mask is painted with running horses. He has a yellow dance rattle in his left hand, but the right hand is empty. Signed on the 10 inch natural cottonwood base "JoAnn C. Horse," excellent with colors still bright. 2) 8-1/2 inch clown with yellow and black painted costume, Sun faces on the turquoise wooden mask. Has sticks in both hands. The clown often acted as sergeants at arms to control the children at ceremonies. Natural cottonwood base. Unsigned, excellent. 3) Unidentified 13 inch Kachina holding a knife in one hand and a dance rattle in the other. Rain clouds on wood mask. Some wear to right arm paint and tail. The base is missing. Unsigned.
