Description:

This is an excellent example of a relatively rare WWII British anti-tank rifle called the Projectile Infantry Anti-Tank rifle commonly know as a PIAT. These were the standard British WWII anti-tank rifle used by all infantry and airborne forces during the war. They are most unusual, based on the actual method of firing the rounds, which was a very large, spring driven steel-piston firing mechanism inside the actual tube of the rifle. The rifle was actually cocked by placing the rear plate on the ground and the tube was pulled upwards to compress the spring which retracted the steel driving piston. When it was fired or released, this spring drove this steel piston up through the base of the round and launched it. Just like the same concept as a spring-driven air gun except in this case there is a steel rod versus air power that actual launches the round. This is somewhat of an ancient technological choice in comparison to the German Panzerfaust and US Bazooka which actually fired a self-contained anti-tank rocket with propellant inside. However these served throughout the war in all theatres. The actual rifle is approximately 39 inch long and fired a high explosive round with an 80mm warhead on it that had an effective range of approximately 100-150 meters. It has the basic British style flip up iron sights, offset to the left like the Bren gun and the only markings on the rifle are the serial number around the front end. It appears to have been repainted after the war and currently has a dark sand brown color and it comes in an original wooden storage case that has Greek stenciled markings on the side and lid. The top of the lid has an old, old Century Arms shipping label (circa 1960s) on it, indicating that it was shipped to an address in the Chicago area. The rifle is complete with two extra driving springs and the monopod that mounts on the front end of the barrel.

Rating Definition:

Fine overall with 95% of a dark brown sand colored paint. The box is in good to very good condition, still intact with 90% of the original green paint on the outside and showing the years of being hauled around.
