Massachusetts Arms Percussion Pocket Revolver with Maynard's Patent Priming Device

Marked "MASS. ARMS CO./ CHICOPEE FALLS" on the top strap and "MAYNARD'S PATENT/ SEP. 22. 1845" on the primer cover. The serial is on the frame under the primer cover and again under the grips. The inside of the top strap is marked "738". Produced between 1851 and 1860, this revolver replaces the percussion cap, standard ignition source of the day, with a Maynard tape system, sometimes seen on military rifles. This revolver is the earliest type which has the manually revolved cylinder. The release button is mounted on the inside of the trigger guard. Pin front sight and notch rear sight on the top strap. The barrel and top strap are hinged for easy removal of the cylinder. The 6-round unfluted cylinder is florally etched, and the frame and hammer are lightly scroll engraved. The grips are smooth varnished walnut. Total production on this type was only about 900.

ConditionGood. All metal surfaces have a smooth gray patina. Much of the original silver plating remains on the slightly bent trigger guard. The exposed areas have an aged patina. The cylinder etching is partially visible. The remaining marks and engraving are clear. The action needs adjustment, it is very difficult to cock the hammer. The manual revolving cylinder works properly. The grips are good with scattered tiny dings around the screw hole and minor handling marks.
