This is a very good example of a 98K rifle as manufactured by the Mauser Werke, in the Oberndorf A.N. factory. The top of the receiver is marked with the Eagle / 135 acceptance proof over "byf/ 42". The left side of the receiver and barrel are marked with "eagle/ swastika" proofs. The receiver side wall has the small block "Mod.98" markings. The top of the bolt handle and the rear of the bolt assembly are numbered to the gun, and the top of the barrel is numbered "42D56". Early style milled components. The stock and handguard are the correct laminate pistol grip versions with the cupped steel buttplate. The front sight is the fixed inverted "V" and the rear sight is graduated to 2,000 meters. Very good, with 70% of the original blue finish, showing a smooth gray patina overall, along with some minor spotting and handling marks. Stock is good as freshened, with a few very thin cracks, varnish loss, and pressure dents. Action is excellent.
