Engraved Deluxe Winchester 1886 Rifle in 40-65

This is just a beautiful example of a deluxe Winchester 1886 lever action rifle that has been engraved in a factory No. 10 pattern attributed to J. Ulrich. This rifle is a fairly early model being produced in Jan/Feb 1889, that has been fitted with a beautiful deluxe Winchester 3X Burl walnut pistol grip stock and forend both with a factory checkered patterns and a factory set trigger. Both sides of the receiver have been adorned in a number 10 style engraving depicting a standing deer scene on the left side with a bordered edge. With the same bordered edge on the right side accompanied by several areas of tight scroll engraving with a light punch dot back ground. The top of the tang has the early style markings of "----MODEL 1886----" with the early two line patent marking: "PAT. OCT. 14. 1884. / JAN. 20. 1885.-" behind the trigger with the serial number engraved in a script pattern towards the end of the lower tang. It is fitted with a tapered full octagon barrel, with full length magazine and the top barrel flat is marked: "----MANUFACTUED BY THE----/----WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN.CONN. U.S.A-----" ahead of the rear sight and "40-65 W.C.F." directly in front of the receiver ring. It is fitted with a half-German silver front sight blade with an adjustable semi buckhorn rear sight. The receiver, hammer, loading lever and buttplate were color casehardened with the remaining parts being blued. The providence for this rifle is that it was sold by Butterfields and Butterfields which listed it as formerly being in the Woods collection, where as it was described as factory engraved (we cannot verify the engraving without letter due to the refinish). There is a similar factory engraved 1886 rifle in this same approximate serial number range as shown on page 163 of the book "Winchester Engraving" by R.L. Wilson.

ConditionPartially refinished overall with 90% of the faded original blue finish on the barrel and magazine tube showing only minor wear on the edges of the barrel, magazine tube and magazine tube retaining ring. The hammer and loading lever both show 75-85% of the case colors with the balance fading to a silvery patina, and the buttplate has faded to a slivery patina. The receiver has had the factory color case hardened finish professionally restored, and it still shows excellent nice sharp engraving detail. The stock has most of the original high polished finish remaining showing only some minor handling marks on the side while the forend shows 90% of the original factory finish remaining showing signs of flaking on the rear section in front of the receiver. The stock and forend both show fine factory checkering with nice diamonds showing only a few minor light pressure dents on the left side of the pistol grip, probably from sitting in a rifle rack. Still an attrative example of a very early 1886 lever action rifle with several deluxe features with engraving attributed to J. Ulrich.
