Description:

These rifles were actually developed during the early part of the Civil War period, and were never able to get into full production for the Government before the war ended. Subsequent sales were primarily military sales to foreign countries both in Europe and South America. The left side of the receiver is marked "PEABODY'S PAT./ JULY 22 1862/ MAN'F'D BY/ PROVIDENCE TOOL Co./ PROV. R.I.". The left side of the buttstock has a small boxed "WB" cartouche and most of the various components; hammer, upper and lower receiver, breech bolt, lock mechanism, butt plate sling bar base and lower tang all have a single sub inspector's letter proof similar to US contract weapons. The top rear section of the barrel and top of the receiver have a single "Crown V" proof that is indicative of the early British view and acceptance proofs associated with the London Proof house.

Rating Definition:

Near excellent, approximately 90% slightly faded original finish remaining, with scattered light scuffs, scratches, and nicks. Receiver, lever, and hammer show approximately 70% original case colors. The wood is very fine with light dings and scratches.
