Description:

Model 1860 Cavalry Officer's Saber with 34-1/2- inch double fuller blade and elaborate cast silver hilt. The blade is etched with 15-inch decorative panels with an Eagle and Shield motif on the obverse and "U.S." on the reverse. The obverse ricasso has a panel etched "W.H.HORSTMANN / & SONS / PHILADELPHIA". The heavy silver plated hilt has a Eagle and Shield on a background of crossed flags and laurel and oak leaves between the lower branches. The guard has an elaborate cast knuckle bow. The down-turned quillon is cast in a leaf pattern with floral centers. The flat-top pommel has cast leaves on the top and a relief Medusa head on the back strap. The silver-plated grip is cast with the 15 grooves and has highly detailed cast brass bands in place of the traditional twisted wire wrap. The one-piece iron scabbard has silver plated suspension bands and drag. The suspension rings are attached by cast laurel wreaths and the bands feature relief stands of arms and colors. The sides of the drag are decorated with a soldier in relief beneath a flying eagle with shield and cannon on both sides. This is a flashy, high grade, presentation quality Civil War Model 1860 Cavalry Officer's Saber. The saber does not have an inscription or presentation.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The blade has a dull silver finish and shows minimal wear. The etched panels are sharp. The silver-plated hilt is in very fine condition. The scabbard body has some patches of discoloration but is free from dents and in fine condition overall. This is an elaborate Horstmann Civil War M1860 Cavalry Officer's Saber in fine condition.
