Description:

Model 1840 Dragoon Saber with brass, three-branch guard, leather covered grip with twisted brass wire wrap and 36- inch, flat back, double fuller blade with leather washer. The blade is marked "R & C" on the obverse ricasso but has no other markings. The saber is complete with a standard pattern iron scabbard with two suspension rings. The unmarked blade is probably a German blade imported during the Civil War; lack of Federal Ordnance inspection marks indicates the sword was probably state purchased.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The blade is bright with most of the original polish; wear is limited to some very minor nicks in the edge. The brass hilt has not been polished and is in fine condition with a mellow age patina. The leather cover and brass wire wrap are in excellent condition and may be a restoration. The scabbard has a mottled brown age patina but is free from dents.
