Description:

The M1840 Saber has a 35 3/4-inch, unmarked, flat back, double fuller blade, brass three branch hilt with leather cover, wire wrapped grip and a iron scabbard with two suspension rings. A "GFC" ordnance inspection mark is stamped on the obverse side of the Phrygian Cap pommel below the rib. The unmarked blade was probably imported from Europe during the Civil War. The scabbard has no visible markings.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The blade has most of the original bright finish with light age patina and some scattered discoloration. The hilt has never been polished and has a dark age patina. The original leather cover is present and all of the brass wire wrap is tight and intact. The iron scabbard has a dark brown patina with light pitting. A very good example of the primary Federal Civil War Cavalry Saber.
