This is a Type II Gwyn & Campbell "Union Carbine" manufactured by Edward Gwyn and Abner Campbell of Hamilton, Ohio with a total production of 4,000. The breech end of the barrel is octagon and is fitted with a short-base, folding leaf, rear sight graduated to 600 yards. Sling bar and ring on the left side of the receiver. The rear lock plate screw enters from the left side of the stock wrist. The hammer is flat with beveled edges and the lever is the shorter Type II pattern with the vertically mounted claw-like latch. The receiver, rear sight base, hammer, and lever had a casehardened finish, all other metal parts were finished in blue. The stock is black walnut with an oil finish. The lock plate is marked "GWYN & CAMPBELL" in an arch over "PATENT / 1862 / HAMILTON. O." behind the hammer and "UNION RIFLE" ahead of the hammer. The serial number, "R889" is stamped on the bottom of the barrel, frame, lever and breech-block. The lower left barrel flat is stamped: "PT".

Rating Definition:

Fair. The metal surfaces have a mottled gray patina except the buttplate which is dark with some minor spotting. The stock is good with a small chip on the toe, a few minor dents, two small gouges on the right side and some minor warping on the left side at the receiver. The markings are clear. The action is fine.
