Description:

Manufactured circa 1862 - 1865 with a total of 12,501 produced, this rifle was also known as the "Zouave Rifle". The barrel was blue, the hammer and lock casehardened and the mountings are brass. The lock is marked with the eagle/shield over "U.S." and "REMINGTON'S / ILION, N.Y." in front of the hammer and dated "1863" behind the hammer. . The top of the barrel is dated 1863 with " V / P eagle head" proofs to the left and the left flat is marked "STEEL" followed by "K K A". The front sight is fixed and the rear sight is a three leaf type. The left side stock flat is marked with "BH" and "HDJ" cartouches, it is fitted with a brass patch box on the right side with an extra nipple and the buttplate tang is marked "U.S.". There is a bayonet lug mounted on the right side of the barrel and it has a iron tulip head ram rod. The Model 1863 was one of he best made and designed military arms of the Civil War Era. The origin of the name "Zouave" has yet been revealed, but in official documents and the U.S. contract it was called the "Harpers Ferry Pattern".

Rating Definition:

Good. The barrel has been cleaned bright with pin prick type pitting on the forward two thirds and a little heavier pitting on the rear third. The hammer and lock plate have a dark mottled patina. The sling swivels have moderate pitting. The brass components have an even natural aged patina. The stock is fine with scattered minor dents, dings and nicks. The edges of the flats remain sharp and the cartouches are clear. The markings on the metal surfaces are clear. Mechanically fine.
