Description:

This is an example of a scarce 5 inch barrel mid-Civil War production Colt Model 1849 revolver that was manufactured in 1863. The top of the barrel flat has the marking: "ADDRESS COL. SAML COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA". The cylinder is roll-engraved with the Stagecoach holdup scene, "COLT'S PATENT" and the partial serial number "28457". The left side of the frame is marked: "COLTS/PATENT" and the rear of left trigger guard marked: "4". The full serial number "228457" is located on the barrel, frame, trigger guard and blackstrap. The partial number "90384" is marked on the wedge. Fitted with smooth one piece varnished walnut grips.

Rating Definition:

Very good plus. Approximately 25% fading original blue finish remains on the barrel with light pin prick pitting scattered with surface scratches and dings down the length. The loading lever retains faint but distinct traces of original case colors. The cylinder scene is a factory error in that it was rolled further forward, thus giving the appearance of a shortened cylinder, which it is not. The frame retains traces of original casehardened finish, the balance is now a smooth mottled gray patina with spotting and handling marks. The grips are very fine with most of the varnish and light scattered pressure marks.
