Description:

Fifth model Burnside carbine manufactured from 1863 to 1865. Burnside carbines were one of the primary Federal Cavalry carbines for the first three years of the Civil War and were issued extensively in both Eastern and Western theaters. The 5th Model differs in that it has a guide screw in the center of the right side frame allowing smoother operation as the breech rides in a corresponding groove in the breechblock. The barrel is fitted with a pinched front sight and two leaf rear sight graduated to 500 yards. The receiver and lock are absent of any markings except for the top of the receiver at the breech marked "BURNSIDE PATENT / MODEL OF 1864" over the serial number. The matching number also appears on the top of the breechblock. There is a saddle ring bar and ring mounted on the left side of the receiver. The top of the barrel is stamped "CAST STEEL 1864" ahead of the rear sight. Small "B" and "P" sub-inspector's markings are stamped on some small components. Two faint script Ordnance inspection marks are stamped on the left stock wrist. Smooth straight grip stock with sling swivel and smooth steel buttplate.

Rating Definition:

Good plus. The metal surfaces have been cleaned bright. The wood remains very good with overall scattered minor dents and dings. The markings are clear. Mechanically excellent.
