Description:

First Model Merrill Carbine with brass barrel band, trigger guard and patch box. The lock plate has a beveled edge and is marked with the serial number, "4944" vertically at the rear of the lock. "J.H. MERRILL BALTO / PAT. JULY.1858. / APL.9 MAY 21-28-61" is marked on the lock plate below the bolster and "J. H. MERRILL BALTO / PAT. JULY 1858" is marked on top of the breech lever. The serial number is also present on the rear of the breech lever. The breech lever has the First Type flat, knurled latch. The carbine has a three-leaf, folding rear sight graduated to 500 yards that serves as a latch for the breech lever. A sling bar and ring are mounted on the left side of the stock flat.

Rating Definition:

Period refinished with most of the finish remaining with scattered minor dings and pitting, which have been finished over. The brass has an aged natural patina. The heavily worn stock is sanded and reoiled with overall scattered minor dings, chips and dents. The markings are clear. Mechanically excellent.
