Description:

This is an example of a late production Civil War era Triplet and Scott carbine. These carbines have a very unique breech loading mechanism that swings to the right side to pick up a cartridge housed in a loading tube below the receiver. They were produced right at the end of the civil war; consequently, few saw actual use, with most being sold on a state contract to the militia of Kentucky. Approximately 5000 total of this breech loading model were made, and of that only 2000 were produced as carbines, (22 inch barrel), making this a very scarce carbine. The top of the tang is marked "TRIPPLET & SCOTT / PATENT DEC 6 1864" and the left side of the receiver is marked "MERIDAN MANFG Co. / MERRRIDAN CONN.". The left side of the breech area has the very small marking of "KENTUCKY" signifying a state contract carbine.

Rating Definition:

Fair. The barrel and buttplate have a smooth dark patina and the remaining metal has a smooth mottled gray patina. The right side of the wrist has a repaired crack and the left side has three large cracks. The stock does remain solid. The sling swivel on the heel has been removed and there are some overall minor dents, dings and scratches. The markings are clear. Mechanically good.
