Rare Sailor's Flat Hat from the U.S.S. Maine

There is one other hat from the Maine in this sale. This one was worn on the Maine a good time before it was sunk, and the sailor had finished his tour of duty. Undoubtedly after he heard of the Maine's sinking he put his hat away as a memento to be saved. The hat ribbon (tally) has the name "U.S.S. Maine" stenciled on it in gold, the same technique used as early as in the Civil War but replaced with embroidering by the time the ship was wrecked. The ribbon has been on the hat its entire life, easily determined by aging and wear. The ribbon has the standard flat bow, sewn into the hat. Navy blue wool. Thick, black sweatband.

ConditionExcellent. The gold paint has begun to flake but every letter is still 100% legible. Has a 1/8" moth hole. The body is excellent. An absolutely genuine, original hat.
