First Year Production Colt Model 1862 Police Percussion Revolver

Manufactured from 1861 to 1873 with this revolver made in 1861, the first year of production. The Model 1862 was the last of the Colt percussion revolvers. The top of the barrel is marked "--ADDRESS SAML COLT HARTFORD CT.--", "COLTS / PATENT" on the left side of the frame and "L" on the left trigger guard shoulder. Fluted cylinder marked "PAT. SEPT. 10th 1850" in one of the flutes. Blue barrel and cylinder, casehardened loading lever, frame and hammer and silver plated brass trigger guard and backstrap. Brass cone front and hammer notch rear sights and fitted with smooth one-piece varnished walnut grips. All matching numbers. The wedge is in too tight to check. Colt manufactured approximately 19,000 of these revolvers and many were used for metallic conversion making them quite scarce on today's market.

ConditionVery fine. The barrel and cylinder show some signs of cleaning and retain strong original finish on the sides of the lug and in the cylinder flutes. There is minor pitting on the cylinder and a small amount on the breech end of the barrel. The frame retains strong muted original case colors with most of the original casehardening pattern remaining. The hammer sides show bright original case colors mixed with smooth dark patina. The trigger guard and back strap retain approximately 90% original silver plating, some beginning to darken with age. The small amount of exposed brass has an aged patina. The grips are excellent retaining most of the original varnish with some lower edge wear, a small chip on the right toe and a few minor dings and handling marks. From the Will Hoffeld collection, purchased from Dick Donaldson in 1985.
