Colt Model 1861 Navy Revolver

This Colt Model 1861 Navy revolver was manufactured in 1861, the first year of production. This particular revolver is pictured on page 144 of the book, "The William Locke Collection". At the time the caption read in part "Serial numbers, except for those on the wedge and cylinder which are number 144, have been removed". The caption also mentions the stamping in separate letters "T FURNISS / PHILA" on the butt and "T FURNISS" on the backstrap. According to consignor notes, the serial number had been located and restored on the barrel, frame, trigger guard and backstrap. T. Furniss was 1st Lt. Thomas Furniss who was a member of the 8th Pennsylvania Cavalry, Company L out of Philadelphia, discharged March 17th , 1862. The top of the barrel is marked with the standard "Address Col. SamL Colt New-York U.S. America", the left side of the frame is marked "COLTS / PATENT", the left side of the barrel at the breech is marked with the letter "C" and the cylinder is roll engraved with the Texas naval battle scene and marked "COLTS PATENT NO 144". Equipped with a German silver blade front sight, hammer notch rear sight and fitted with smooth one-piece walnut grips.

ConditionRefinished and renumbered. The metal surfaces have been cleaned to a bright metal finish and artificially aged with some scattered minor pitting and some scattered dings on the barrel. The brass has an artificially aged patina. The markings on the butt and backstrap appear to be period. The grips are very good, are slightly warped on the left side and have a pleasant hand rubbed patina with a few minor dents and dings. The cylinder scene is faint but visible and the markings are clear. The action is good. From the William Locke and more recently the Will Hoffeld collections.
