U.S. Colt Model 1911 Semi-Automatic Pistol with Unique Hammer

Colt U.S. Army M1911pistol manufactured in 1913. This pistol was subsequently fitted with a modified hammer with a long, upward curved, and serrated spur. The hammer is similar to the variations prepared by Springfield to test the possibility of redesigning the M1911 hammer in response to complaints from the field about difficulty cocking and un-cocking the standard, short, hammer. This hammer was designated Design No. 1. The Design No. 1 was rejected by the Chief of Ordnance and Design No. 2 was sent to the School of Musketry at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma, for further testing. This pistol, serial number 50783, fitted with the Design No. 1 style hammer is illustrated and described on page 142 of "U.S. MILITARY AUTOMATIC PISTOLS, 1894-1920" by Edward S. Meadows and was formerly in the Meadows' collection. The pistol has no modifications other than the hammer and retains the round-profile rear sight, early pattern safety lock and two-tone magazine with lanyard loop. The pistol has the "dull" blue finish adopted by Colt on March 23, 1912 and is fitted with the standard checkered, black walnut, stocks with diamonds surrounding the stock screws. The left side of the slide is roll-stamped with the 1897-1911 patent dates in a two line block followed by the two line block Colt Hartford address and the Rampant Colt trademark behind the slide serrations. The right side of the slide is roll-stamped: "MODEL OF 1911.U.S.ARMY". The serial number, "No 50783" is stamped on the right side of the frame behind the slide stop hole. The left side of the frame is roll-stamped "UNITED STATES PROPERTY" is front of the trigger guard and a round monogram with the initials "WPG" of the Ordnance Inspector, MAJ Walter G. Penfield above the magazine release. An "H" Colt provisional inspection marks is stamped on the rear of the slide above the firing pin stop and on the top of the frame in front of the disconnector hole. A "T" Colt assembler's mark is stamped to the right of the hole. The barrel is blued and has a "P" proofmark and "H" conditional inspection mark stamped on the top of the chamber perpendicular to the axis of the bore. A "J" is stamped on the left side of the barrel lug.

ConditionExcellent pistol. The slide and frame retains approximately 97% of the original military blue finish. The sides and edges of the slide have some scattered and very minor scuff marks and high point wear. There is very light handling wear on the grip strap and main spring housing. The barrel has a bout 75% of the blue finish on the chamber. All of the Colt markings and Ordnance inspection marks remain sharp. The checkered walnut grips are in excellent condition and have minimal wear. The hammer retains 95% of the current nitre blue.
