Description:

This is an excellent example of a mid-1930s 1903A1 National Match rifle as manufactured by Springfield Armory. These rifles were the apex of Springfield rifle production during this time and NM rifles were produced from 1921 until approximately 1940. They were assembled with select manufactured parts made with tight NM tolerance standards, which required them to be hand fitted to give the shooter optimum accuracy potential from the rifle. This rifle was produced in mid 1935 which probably constituted a sale in late 1935 (which would have been a fiscal year 1936 sale). During 1936, only 1200 1903A1 NM rifles were sold. The top of the receiver is marked "U.S. / SPRINGFIELD / ARMORY / MODEL 1903." over SN "1462513" and the barrel is marked "S.A./ordnance bomb/6-35" behind the front sight. It has the correct star-gage mark on the muzzle of the barrel and also the correct star-gage number (B2292) stamped on top of the barrel in front of the rear sight base. The receiver has the correct polished receiver rails required on NM rifles with the correct nickel steel bolt, still in white, with the serial number electric pencil marked on top. The bolt has been retrofitted with an earlier style headless cocking piece, which is intended to speed up the lock time. It is fitted with a correct pre-war NM pistol grip "C" stock and hand guard. The stock is the two reinforcing bolt version that has a boxed "SA/SPG" cartouche on the left side with a single circled "P" proof in the pistol grip area, with a small "s and 5" sub inspectors proof in the cut off area. The stock also has the correct NM checkered buttplate. This rifle has been fitted with the grooved trigger fixed front sight with a nice Parker Hale push-on front sight cover, with a military tangent rear sight that is graduated from 100-2700 yards with no notch on top of the ladder. It is complete with an original pre-war unmarked Model 1907 leather sling. The stock does not have the rifle serial number stamped ahead of the lower sling swivel. The stock may be a replacement. The serial number on the bolt does not appear to be a typical SA marking.

Rating Definition:

Excellent overall, with 98-99% of the pre-war parkerized finish with wear only on the edges and high spots. The re-varnished stock is in the fine condition with minimal handling marks. The proofs are clear and distinct.
