Rare U.S. Springfield Rod Bayonet Model 1903 Rifle

A rare example of a Springfield Armory Rod Bayonet Model 1903 rifle. Springfield Armory manufactured approximately 74,500 Rod Bayonet Model 1903 rifles between November 1903 and January 1905, when the rifle design was modified to accommodate the knife bayonet. Nearly all of the Rod Bayonet Model 1903 rifles were subsequently modified to accept the Model 1905 Bayonet and were re-chambered for the .30-06 cartridge adopted in October 1906. Fewer than 100 original, unaltered, Model 1903 Rod Bayonet rifles are estimated to survive in collections and museums. This rifle was manufactured in January 1904 and received the 1905 alterations. The rifle has the unique sliding rod bayonet, distinctive front sight with two holes in the base, special upper barrel band, full length walnut hand guard with two spring clip rivets, Krag style tangent rear sight graduated to 2,000 yards, smooth trigger and early pattern Mauser type safety with "READY" and "SAFE" markings. Correctly, the stock has no reinforcing bolts and the buttplate has the early, small diameter trap numbered "107" on the inside of the door. The top of the receiver is marked "U.S. / SPRINGFIELD / ARMORY/ MODEL 1903 / 4400" in five lines. The cut-off lever has the "OFF" and "ON" markings in block letters. The blued bolt has a "C 8" steel lot code on the under side of the safety lug and is stamped with "K" and a punch mark on the underside of the handle. Both barrel bands are stamped with the serifed "U" on the right side. The bottom of the stock wrist is marked with the circled script "P" firing proof and a "0" sub-inspection mark. The receiver has a dark, oil-quenched, casehardened finish. The cocking piece, bolt sleeve and safety have a water-quenched case finish with brighter case colors. The barrel, bands, trigger guard and floor plate have a blue finish. The rifle has an original nickel oiler and cleaning brush kit in the butt trap and is fitted with the correct russet leather Model 1903 sling marked "ROCK ISLAND / ARSENAL /1903". The rifle has a later pattern stacking swivel, split lower barrel band, followed with rounded tip and extractor with dark parkerized finish. This rifle would be the centerpiece of the most advanced martial arms collection.

ConditionFine as Arsenal refurbished. The rifle retains 95% of the arsenal blue and casehardened finish. The rear sight base has a satin-gray patina with scattered light spotting. The front sight base is bright. The rear sight base pin and front sight pin are clearly visible. The bore is bright. The stock and handguard in fine overall condition with light storage and handling wear. The stock has a hair-line crack in the upper wrist that extends from the receiver tang to just below the comb. This is a very good example of a rare Rod Bayonet Model 1903 rifle.
