A) Dayton Mountain Man Half Stock Percussion Rifle

Description:

The lock is marked "DAYTON", and there is light floral scroll engraving on the lock and hammer. The top barrel flat behind the rear sight is engraved "D.W.V.D." Replacement brass blade front and iron rear sights, brass under rib and wooden ramrod. Mounted with a straight grip half stock with a pewter forend cap, double set triggers, brass trigger guard, left side plate and buttplate. The left side of the stock has an inset silver arrow head.

Rating Definition:

Good. The metal surfaces have a mottled gray patina with a few minor dings on the barrel. The brass has an aged patina. The stock has been sanded and refinished and remains good with a few scattered minor dents and dings. The engraving and markings are clear. The action is fine. Purchased at the Las Vegas Show in 1989, part of the Will Hoffeld Collection.

Description:

Nicanor Kendall used prisoners in the prison in Windsor, Vermont to manufacture his under hammer rifles at the rate of 32 cents a day per man. The rifle features a bead front and adjustable rear sights, wooden ramrod mounted under the barrel and under barrel action which is housed in the stock rather than a conventional receiver. Brass trigger guard, patch box, initial rectangle on the left side and buttplate.

Rating Definition:

Good. The metal surfaces have a dark patina with high edge wear and several scattered minor dents and dings on the barrel. The brass has aged to a dark patina. The stock is good with the varnish flaked off on the wrist and around the patch box. There are a few minor dings and dents. The barrel marking is clear and crisp. The action is fine. Purchased from Charles Akins in 1978, part of the Will Hoffeld Collection.
