Description:

This is a fine example of a mid 19th century heavy barrel percussion target rifle. The rifle is fitted with a percussion lock plate that has a fine English style scroll engraving on each end and directly below the nipple area it is marked "Truitt Bros". The barrel measures 1.25 X 1.25 breech to muzzle and is approximately 32 inches in length. The top of the barrel originally had several dovetails for various target sights that have been nicely plugged and rebrowned. Currently it is fitted with an old steel rear peep sight and an old globe style front sight to which someone has attached a 35 inch brass tube, which effectively turned it into a full length sighting tube. The rifle is fitted in a heavy almost massive Kentucky pattern full length maple stock that has a thick wrist and wide full length forend to handle the barrel. The entire stock has been tiger stripped, which is exactly how they did that in the early to mid 1850s and it is fitted with a double set trigger, brass trigger guard, buttplate toe plate and patchbox. The barrel is held in by three cross-pins that have ivory escutcheons and it has a tiger stripped maple ramrod, false muzzle and brass bullet starter.

Rating Definition:

Fine overall, the metal surfaces have been nicely rebrowned giving it a nice old aged look and the brass has been lightly polished. The is in very good condition being solid overall with no cracks or damage and the brass furniture and stock have been lightly varnished to protect them.
