Description:

This an excellent example of a cased pair of percussion dueling pistols as produced by Joseph Manton of London. Joseph Manton was one of the premier gunsmiths in London during this time and produced some of the finest known percussion dueling pistols. These pistols measure approx. 12 1/8" overall with 6 1/8" medium to heavy .62 cal. smooth bore, round barrels with swivel ramrods. Both pistols were handle fitted in a very nice grade of walnut. The top of each barrel is marked "LONDON" and the lock plate of each pistol is also marked "MANTON". Each pistol has a very fine English scroll engraving with a geometric border around the edges of the lock plates, rear of each barrel, the tang, sides of the hammer, trigger guard and trigger plate. Each pistol is fitted with silver escutcheons, a small silver plaque behind the tang, along with a single silver-filled band at the breech end of each barrel. There is a small brass filled clean-out plug on each bolster. The wood to metal fit is exceptional overall being nice and tight. Each pistol has the elongated pistol grip area with near full-length checkering on both sides. Each pistol has a blank silver presentation plate behind the tang. The pair of pistols are contained in an original green felt lined fitted Manton presentation case with the original "Joseph Manton, Gun makers London" label inside the lid. The case has compartments that holds a single cavity bullet mold, two-compartment Dixon flask, an F. Joyce & Co. percussion cap box, along with an extra nipple, screwdriver and key. The original compartment covers are retained and show marine ivory pulls, with labels on each bottom that show "John Lord & CO. Merchants, London". The exterior of the case shows a brass carrying handle and brass mounts.

Rating Definition:

The pistol remains in very fine condition, showing 80%-90% period refurbished brown finish on the barrel mixed with a light patina on the trigger guard and lower tang area. The lock shows light casehardening colors with just some beginning staining. The stock is excellent with 95% of the original varnish, some minor scratches, light pressure dents from normal carrying and storage, with sharp checkering. The pistols show typical Manton quality throughout with good engraving and nicely finished tangs. A super example of the standard 1850 percussion dueling pistols. From the Rudy Schafer Estate.
