Excellent Silver Banded and Engraved Andrew Wurfflein Philadelphia Pocket Derringer

Produced between 1845 and 1871, Andrew Wurfflein was the first member of his family to appear on record as a gunsmith, operating in and around Philadelphia. Silver blade front and notch rear sights, with an etched spiral pattern on the barrel, "A. WURFFLEIN/ PHILa" on the top flat, "CAST STEEL" on the upper right, a sunburst pattern on the top of the breech, and a zigzag pattern on the left, along with a bordering pair of silver bands at the breech. The Wurfflein mark is repeated on the lock plate, with scroll engraving on the lock, hammer, and upper tang. Silver furniture, with a plain wedge in the tip of the stock and engraved trigger guard, accent plate, escutcheons, reverse plate, shield escutcheon and buttcap. Checkered bird head stock. Similar pistols are pictured in Volume One of the Wilson and Eberhart book, "The Deringer in America".

ConditionExcellent plus. The crisp bright original brown finish on the barrel is 99%, with a few hints of lighter brown in the gray twist pattern. The lock plate and tang show a crisp soft gray casehardened finish, turning darker in the protected areas and on the breech. Silver is excellent, with traces of an aged patina. Grip is excellent, with some extremely minor varnish loss and scattered pressure dents. Mechanically fine.
