Description:

Originating from an association with a jewelry business in 1816, James N. Hyde and Charles W. Goodrich came on the register in 1832 or 1834. As a result of the death of the original partners, the firm would be reformed as Thomas, Griswold & Company on July 1, 1861, producing cavalry sabers and pikes until the city's capture by Union forces. German silver blade front and notch rear sights, with scroll engraving on the tang, a burst pattern on the tang screw, scrollwork on the breech with a "P" on the left flat, a pair of 18k gold bands at the breech, and "DERINGER/ PHILADEL'A" stamped on the barrel flat next to "MANUD FOR/ HYDE & GOODRICH/ AGENTS N. ORLEANS". Deringer's address is repeated on the lock plate, decorated with a border pattern and scroll engraving. Additional scrollwork is visible on the hammer (along with fish head decoration), the accent and reverse plates (both with borders), the trigger guard, and on the separated stock tip and ramrod pipe, which holds a brass tipped hardwood rod. The finial is decorated in a leaf style, decorative bulbs on the escutcheons, zigzag border lines on the shield escutcheon, and "M" over a 3-leaf clover on the buttplate, which has a cap box with blossom engraved trapdoor. "E" is stamped on the rear of the trigger guard and on the butt ahead of the plate. Fancy checkered walnut stock, with bird's head butt.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The original streaked pattern remains visible on the barrel, strongest on the sides, with the original brown having turned to gray. A light brown patina has formed on the lock plate and tang, with a darker color on the hammer and breech, mild flash pitting around the nipple, and all showing traces of the original casehardened pattern. Fine grip, with minor scratches and pressure dents. The silver is bright overall, with some darker colors on the accent plate, buttplate, and in the protected areas. The action is excellent. A great example of a scarce gold inlaid New Orleans agent marked Henry Deringer pistol.
