Rare Engraved Silver Mounted and Gold Inlaid Slotter & Company "Deringer" Patent Infringement Pistol in "Peanut" Size

Though bearing several Deringer markings, the flattened profile of the butt suggests this is actually the product of the Schlotterbeck brothers of Slotter & Company. Produced between 1860 and 1863, these arms were made by Slotter & Co primarily for A.J. Plate of San Francisco, owing to a misinterpreted comment by Deringer; before leaving the firm, Charles Schlotterbeck displayed a pair of pistols he had made, and Deringer said he would be proud to have his name on them. This was interpreted as a blanket authorization to use the Deringer name by the soon to be formed Slotter & Co. German silver blade front and notch rear sights, with "DERINGER / PHILADELA" on top of the breech, "P" on the left among scroll engraving, and a pair of 24k gold bands ahead of the rear sight. The Deringer address is repeated on the lock, with scroll engraving and a punch dot border, scrollwork on the hammer, accent plate, trigger plate, tip inlay, reverse plate, and the buttplate, border work on the shield escutcheon and escutcheons, and a leaf-like design on the trigger guard finial. Checkered stock, with a Schnabel tip, bird's head butt, and a capbox integrated into the buttplate.

ConditionVery fine. Approximately 40% of the original brown is visible on the barrel, mixed in with a smooth gray patina. The case colors have mostly silvered out, with traces of the pattern on the breech and color on the left side of the hammer, along with a bright color to the gold bands. Silver is fine, showing a darker, aged patina in the lower and protected areas and a bit of polish on the raised points. Fine stock, with exception of a very thin hairline crack visible on the right side of the checkered area and on the left extending forward from the plate, along with some minor varnish loss and pressure dents. The action is fine. A quality example of a firearm with an interesting and controversial history.
