Five Cartridge Cases Recovered from the Site of The Battle of Little Big Horn, with Confirming Documentation

All five of the cartridges in this lot are from the collection of Jason Pitsch's Reno Battlefield Museum. Mr. Pitsch, a farmer and owner of 30,000 acres of land in the area of Little Big Horn, started collecting and cataloging artifacts recovered from the site, in the process setting up the Reno Battlefield Museum. Each casing comes with a signed and sealed certificate from the Reno Museum, certifying the artifact as a bona-fide, legally collected battlefield artifact, including a map denoting the location of recovery in many cases. Most of the cartridges were recovered with areas associated with Major Marcus A. Reno, Commander of Companies A, G, and M, the first to engage the Indians in battle. Reno, recognizing that the opposing force was far more numerous than expected, pulled his unit back, suffering approximately 50-60 losses, compared to the complete elimination suffered by Custer's unit. 1) A Berdan-primed 50/70 brass cartridge, property number "IC94", recovered in 1993 from the northern bank of the Little Big Horn River, in the path of Reno's retreat. Fine, with a section absent from the mouth and minor crushing. 2) 56/56 Spencer casing, "IC433" recovered in 1991 from the area of Crazy Horse's camp identified as the first fighting position of Chief Gall, who lost two wives to Reno's attack and would play a key role in driving Custer's unit to the Last Stand Hill. Fine, flattened at the mouth with some discoloration. 3) 45/55 Springfield casing, "C332", recovered in 1994 from an area noted as the "Timber Fight Line", where Reno's troops took cover before making their break for the river. Fair, one half of the mouth folded in and mixed green and brown color. 4) 44 Henry casing, "IC 382", recovered in 1995 from an area south of the initial skirmish line, associated on the certificate with Gall. Brass has turned black, with two strikes on the rim and the body flattened. 5) 45 Schofield casing, recovered in 1995 from the southern bank of Little Big Horn, in the route of Reno's retreat. Brass is turned white/ gray, with half the mouth bent inwards. All artifacts are legally recovered and certified as coming from the site of the Battle of Little Big Horn
