Excellent Prototype Winchester Double Action .22 Caliber Revolver with Original Blue Prints

One of two experimental Winchester double action revolvers. Winchester Repeating Arms manufactured less than 10 experimental double action revolvers in the early 1960s in response to a proposal from the Bellmore-Johnson Tool Company to produce a sintered-metal revolver frame. Bellmore-Johnson was a Winchester contractor. The company was involved with sintered-metal process in which powdered metal is compressed to produce a shaped part without extensive machine work. Bellmore-Johnson persuaded Winchester to manufacture several experimental double action revolvers that utilized sintered-metal frames. Winchester abandoned the experiment shortly after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in November 1963. This rare revolver is from the personal collection of Mr. Bob Hillberg who designed hundreds of firearms for major gun companies, and there are only two known examples of this type revolver, Serial #1 in 38 caliber, and this example in 22 caliber. This revolver's mate is discussed in the Winchester Repeater magazine of the Winchester Club of America, Spring 1991, in an article by noted collector Mr. Peter Murray. Also, an article written by Phil Spangenberger in the Guns & Ammo magazine, June 1991, page 74, discusses these revolvers and the fact that there were only two specimens in existence. The revolver is a conventional double action design with 4-inch barrel, 6-shot swing out cylinder, fixed rear sight groove, blued finish and checkered walnut grips. The revolver is not fitted with a firing pin and shows prototype machining throughout. The barrel was manufactured without a front sight. The grooved trigger and serrated hammer are finished bright. The pistol serial number, 5, is stamped on the inside of the frame opposite the crane. The top of the barrel is stamped with the standard "W/P" in an oval Winchester Repeating Arms proof mark just ahead of the frame. The revolver has no other visible markings. The cut-checkered walnut grips have an oiled finish and lack the decorative silver medallions found on Revolver No. 1. Included with the revolver is a large tube containing a number of original blue prints. Several are printed on blue paper and the rest on white drafting paper. The revolver also has the red and white ID tag marked "SERIAL / #5" and the original brass factory tag. This revolver is an ultra-rare example of Winchester’s only known attempt to manufacture a double action revolver.

ConditionExcellent. The revolver retains nearly 95% of the original blue-black finish. There is some flaking in the finish on the forward portion of the barrel and the flaked areas have a brownish patina. The blue finish on the frame and cylinder is slightly mottled or discolored from testing and there is a distinct drag line on the cylinder. The discoloration is only visible in direct light. The bore is excellent. The grips are excellent with light handling marks and sharp checkering. The action does not function reliably in either single or double action modes. An extremely rare opportunity to obtain one of only two known Winchester revolvers of this type which are a museum quality rarity and originally from the Peter and Patty Murray collection.
