Unmarked Dance & Park Percussion Revolver

Variant .41 caliber percussion revolver apparently manufactured by J.H. Dance & Brothers of Columbia, Texas between 1862 and 1864. A similar revolver is illustrated on page 76 of "PERCUSSION REVOLVERS OF THE UNITED STATES" by Roland Thalheimer. It is identified as a "Dance & Park Octagonal Barrel Revolver". The revolver has the distinctive Dance frame with no recoil shields. Unlike most Dance revolvers, it has a full octagon, .41 caliber, barrel unlike the half-octagon/half round .36 or .44 caliber barrel found on most Dance revolvers. However, Dance brothers did make some revolvers with full octagon barrel; one example, serial number 172, is illustrated on pages 78-81 of "DANCE & BROTHERS" by Gary Wiggins. The revolver has a small brass blade front sight, short hammer with narrow spur, brass trigger guard and backstrap and two-piece walnut grips with brass screw escutcheons. The cylinder pin has no grease grooves and may be a replacement. The revolver has no visible markings or serial numbers. This revolver appears to be an early production pistol that was made for commercial sale.

ConditionFair. The revolver has been light cleaned and has an applied gray patina overall. There is scattered light pitting and age texturing on all components and the right side of the barrel lug and left side of the frame have small stress cracks. There is moderate pitting on the front and rear face of the cylinder and the percussion nipples are battered. The cylinder has been heavily cleaned and has been repaired as one of the chambers had blown up and there now is a one inch by 1/4 inch repair in its' place. The brass trigger guard and backstrap are in good condition with an attractive age patina. The grips show considerable handling wear and some age shrinkage and are in good overall condition. The action is functional. This is a solid, variant example of a very rare Confederate J.H. Dance & Brothers Texas revolver.
