Description:

This Johnson Semi-Automatic Rifle was manufactured by Cranston Arms Company. The rifle has the distinctive removable barrel, ten-round rotary magazine and ventilated hand guard. The windage adjustable tangent rear sight is calibrated in meters. The metal components have a gray-green parkerized finish and the two-piece walnut stock has semi-gloss finish. A five-pointed star is stamped above "CRANSTON/ARMS/CO" in a triangle on the right rear of the receiver. The top of the receiver is roll-stamped: "CAL. 30-'06 SEMI-AUTO./"JOHNSON AUTOMATICS"/MODEL OF 1941/MADE IN PROVIDENCE R.I.U.S.A/0111" in five lines along with the five line patent marking. The barrel is dated "1942" near the breech and stamped "30-'06/41" on the front of the lug. The bolt is finished bright and numbered "5795" (M1941 Johnson serial numbers typically do not match. The rifle is complete with the distinctive Johnson cruciform bayonet and russet leather scabbard. The Johnson M1941 Rifle was a contemporary of the M1 Garand Rifle. Although the Johnson Rifle was never officially adopted by the U.S. military, a large quantity of M1941 Rifles were purchased by the Dutch government to arm colonial troops in Java. The Dutch East Indies were captured by the Japanese in 1942 before the rifles were delivered. Some of the Dutch Model 1941 Rifles were issued by the Marine Corps to Marine parachute battalions and were carried in the South Pacific before being replaced by M1 Rifles in 1943. After the war the Dutch Model 1941 Rifles were sold as surplus; some of these rifles were refinished before re-sale.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The rifle appears to be one of the Model 1941 Rifles that was refurbished for commercial sale. The barrel, receiver, rotary magazine and trigger guard have an even gray-green parkerized finish. There is some very light pitting visible beneath the parkerizing on the handguard and the rear sight has a parkerized finish rather then the blue finish originally applied to the sight. The stock has a commercial type varnished finish. The rifle shows minimal wear. The bore is bright. All of the markings on the barrel and receiver are crisp. The bayonet and scabbard are in good condition. The bayonet has about 60% of the original parkerized finish with some traces of surface rust and light pitting. The leather scabbard is a dark russet with tight stitching and moderate handling wear. This is a very good example of a desirable Model 1941 Johnson Semi-Automatic Rifle with scarce bayonet and scabbard.
