Description:

World War One production Springfield Model 1903 Rifle. This rifle appears to have been arsenal overhauled after WWI, possibly by the Marine Corps. The rifle has the original barrel marked "SA/Ordnance bomb and Flame/12-17". The barrel and receiver have the original blue-black finish. The stock has a single reinforcing bolt and a small "S" stamped on the forend tip indicating it was manufactured by Springfield between 1909 and 1913. The stock has a small "30" sub-inspector's mark stamped behind the trigger guard and a small "E" in the cut-off recess; it lacks usual proof and inspection stamps and appears to be a field or U.S.M.C. replacement (Marine Corps overhauled rifles were not stamped with inspection or proofmarks). The 'high hump' pattern hand guard lacks the small interior fixture cut found on pre-1919 Springfield hand guards. The upper and lower barrel bands, trigger guard and floor plate and finely checkered buttplate have a WWII gray-green parkerized finish. The trigger face is serrated. The rear sight is marked "R" on the upper left side of the base and lacks the 2850 yard sighting notch on the center of the leaf found on sights manufactured before late 1918. The rear sight has the post-WWI pattern, flat face, windage and elevation knobs. The bolt has a straight handle and is marked "S35" on the bottom of the safety lug. The bolt has a parkerized finish and has a second, larger, gas port. The receiver has a single, small, gas port of the right side and lacks the second, larger, gas port on the left side ("Hatcher Hole") added to some M1903 rifles overhauled in the late 1930s and early 1940s.

Rating Definition:

Arsenal refurbished. The barrel and receiver have at least 95% of the parkerized finish and the other components have nearly all of the arsenal parkerized finish intact. The bore is fine. The stock appears to have been very carefully sanded but remains in excellent plus condition with virtually no handling or storage marks. All markings on the wood and metal are crisp and clear. Most Model 1903 Rifles were overhauled during their service life. Large numbers of Model 1903 Rifles were overhauled by the Marine Corps in 1941 and 1942. Some of these rifles were carried in combat in the South Pacific in 1942 and most of the remainder were issued for Marine and Navy training. This is a nice looking example of the classic Model 1903 Springfield Rifle.
