Description:

Marked "JAMES WARNER. SPRINGFIELD MASS. U.S.A." on the top strap, "WARNER'S PT/ 1857" on the right side of the frame under the grip. The left side of the frame under the grip has been stamped with the number 12. Both grips have this number in ink at the top. The left grip has been carved with a centurion in a crested helmet above the screw and a shield below it. The frame is engraved with floral scrolls. The cylinder has three knurled bands, three plain bands, and a wider band etched with floral and patriotic designs. Brass cone front sight, notch in nose of hammer rear sight. The tiny screw above the top of the left grip is the feature used to identify the James Warner revolvers when they are not marked, which is much of the time. The screw holds the end of the hand spring which is the earliest example of the use of an expansion (screen door) spring on a firearm.

Rating Definition:

Excellent with 95% thinning blue on the barrel, 85% on the cylinder. 65% of the original silver remains on the frame. The balance remaining has mostly aged to a smooth grayish-blue color which matches the areas where the silver remains. Strong traces of silver remain on the trigger guard. The casehardening on the hammer and loading lever has darkened but flashes of vivid color remain. The exceptional carved grips are excellent with an extremely tiny chip at the top of the left side and show a nice deep mellow color. Mechanically excellent.
