Description:

Patented in 1920, the Jo. Lo. Ar. pistol is an upgraded version of Arrizabalaga's Sharp Shooter with two mechanical differences. First, the installation of an extractor, the second is the installation of a side lever, or palanca, as its inventor Jose de Lopez Arnaiz referred to it. Arnaiz, a Spanish gun dealer, sold Arrizabalaga on the idea of the folding lever, which would permit operation of the slide with the shooting hand. As the Sharp Shooter lacked any mechanical safety mechanisms, this upgrade was advertised as both a convenience and safety upgrade. The arrangement had Arrizabalaga producing the gun, and a company set up by Arnaiz building and installing the levers. Around 30,000 of these palanca-equipped firearms were sold in 9mm before Arnaiz broke off relations for unknown reasons. The chief overseas purchaser was the Peruvian Mounted Police, who found the one-handed operation very functional on horseback. This pistol is much more scarce than the standard 9mm and the consignor notes that this is only one of six known to exist in .45 caliber. The Jo.Lo.Ar is equipped with a fixed blade front sight and notch rear sight on its hinged, fluted barrel. The slide is equipped with the palanca, the face of which is checkered. There are a compliment of proofs on the left side of the frame between the caliber designation and the serial number. The trigger is casehardened, with no trigger guard. Finger grooved hard rubber grips.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. Approximately 80% thinning original blue finish remains on the barrel and the balance is now a mottled brown patina with scattered spotting and dings. The frame retains 75% original blue finish thinning along the edge and high spots with scattered patches of pin prick pitting and some overall spotting. The casehardened trigger and extractor lever show faint but distinct traces of original case colors, vivid in sheltered areas. The grips are fine with exception of a hairline crack on the bottom of the right grip. Mechanically excellent.
