Description:

Springfield N.R.A. Sporter Rifle with Springfield Research Service letter that identifies this rifle as a: "Rifle, U.S. Caliber .30, Model 1903 Sporting NRA" and states that it was sold by the Director of Civilian Marksmanship to Carll P. Winn of Los Fresnos, Texas, on March 3, 1932. Springfield Armory manufactured 1084 "Sporting NRA" rifles in fiscal year 1931 and made 4,496 of these fine rifles between 1923 and 1933. The rifle has a 24-inch barrel with the same contour as the M1922 and M1922M1 .22 Gallery Practice rifles and a oil-finished "NRA" style stock with checkered steel shotgun butt-plate and two reinforcing bolts. The rifle has an armory installed Lyman 48 Micrometer rear sight with clip slot, half-minute windage and elevation adjustments and the turn-down, hunting, front peep utilized only on NRA Sporting Rifles. The barrel has the standard, service style, base and front sight with a gold-tipped, Marble's Sheard front sight blade. The receiver has the slightly rounded front edge found only on NRA Sporting Rifles. The barrel, receiver, trigger guard, floor plate and butt plate have the armory commercial quality rust blue finish. The bolt body and extractor have an armory polished finish with distinctive armory polishing marks on either side of the safety lug. The top of the receiver is roll-stamped: "U.S./SPRINGFIELD/ARMORY/MODEL 1903/1366733". The barrel is stamped: "S A" above the Ordnance Corps 'Shell and Flame' insignia and the date "9-30" in three lines behind the rear sight base. The bolt body is electro-penciled with the rifle serial number "1366733". The top of the bolt handle is machine stamped "N.S.". The safety lever is marked "SAFE " and "READY' in gothic letters. The cut-off lever has gothic markings and the lower, "ON" portion of the lever is polished bright. The stock is correctly stamped with an encircled, gothic, "P" proofmark on the inside of the pistol grip but no Ordnance final inspection mark. The barrel muzzle is stamped at 6-o-clock with the distinctive star-gauge mark and the underside of the barrel is stamped with the star-gauge number: "I/1556". The NRA Sporting rifle was a hand crafted match-grade commercial quality rifle designed by Springfield Armory to meet requests for a high quality .30-06 caliber hunting rifle using the Model 1903 action. The NRA Sporting rifles delivered accuracy that was equal or better to that of Model 1903 National Match rifles. Springfield Armory discontinued production of the NRA Sporting Rifle in 1933 following complaints from commercial gun makers that the government was competing with the sporting rifle industry.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The rifle retains at least 90% of the original rust-blue finish on the barrel, receiver, trigger guard and floor plate. The blue finish on the butt-plate is thin and has some moderate edge wear. The bolt retains all of the original armory polish. The bolt is original to the rifle with matching serial number. The rear sight components are all stamped with the matching assembly number "M7". The bore is bright. The stock and the proof mark on the pistol grip which is crisp. The stock has been re-oiled but remains in very good condition with sharp edges. The only significant wear is a quarter-sized knot or repair on the right side of the butt. This is a fully documented example of the very desirable Springfield Model 1903 N.R.A. Sporting Rifle.
