Description:

This is very good example of an early Type 1 NM M1 rifle that was later upgraded to a Type 2 configuration. This rifle is accompanied by a current letter from the CMP stating that is rifle was sold via the DCM in August 1960 and was issued from the Erie Army Depot. The receiver markings are as follows: "U.S. RIFLE, CAL. 30 M1, SPRINGFIELD ARMORY" over 5310595. The right side of the receiver is marked "A56 over F6528291", and the barrel is marked "SA F6535448, (hand stamped NM), 9-54 A214C" with the small "DOD" acceptance proof. The front portion of the exposed barrel does not have the standard "NM" markings. The various parts are marked as follows: Trigger housing: 6528290, with the front flat electric penciled "Marv Weisner, 0595"; Trigger guard: stamped unmarked; Hammer: SA D5546008; Safety: SA-1; Bolt: 6528287-SA over A11 with the rifle serial number etched on top of the bolt body; Operating Rod: 7790722-RA with "NM" on top of the cocking handle; Bullet Guide: stamped unmarked; Follower Arm: unmarked; Op Rod Catch Assy: single bevel unmarked. The rear sight set is the late post-war NM version that is marked "CPP" and "NM" on the windage knob. The sight base is marked "NM2/A" and the aperture is also the late hooded version marked ".595" and "NM". The front sight is also marked "NM/062" on the right side. The gas cylinder is the correct post war version marked "NM" on the rear tang with the wide base, high hump gas cylinder lock, and the WWII single slot gas plug. The stock and hand guards are the correct walnut versions, that have the late accuracy improvements where the barrel band and front hand guard have been unitized (glued and screwed together) and the stock has been glass bedded, (outside of Springfield Armory). The left side of the stock has the DOD acceptance cartouche and a single "P" proof in the pistol grip area. The lower right side of the buttstock has a small brass plate inset into the stock that is marked "MARVIN WEISNER".

Rating Definition:

Excellent overall with 97% of the original parkerized finish showing wear on the right side receiver side rail, the front section of the bolt, the handle of the operating rod, the gas cylinder and the general edges and high spots overall. The stock and hand guard are both in excellent condition with no handling marks, showing a very light sanding on the sides of the stock with visible cartouches and proofs with an extra coat of varnish or linseed oil. A nice example of an early National Match M1 Garand rifle with CMP documents.
