U.S. Springfield Model 1879 Trapdoor Saddle Ring Carbine

Manufactured in 1880, the breechblock is marked "U.S./MODEL/1873" and the lock plate marked "U.S./SPRINGFIELD/1873" ahead of the eagle motif. Ski ramp ladder rear sight graduated to 1,500 yards, marked "C" on the left side and a blade front sight. "U.S." marked buttplate with cleaning rod compartment (one piece of the rod included). The left side of the barrel is stamped with "V/P/eagle head/P" proof and inspection marks, and there is the letter "R" on the top. Low arch breechblock, three click tumbler and mounted with an oil finished walnut stock with sling bar and ring on the left side. The "SWP/1880" inspection mark is stamped on the left wrist, a small "D" is stamped directly behind the lower tang and there is a circled script "P" further back.

ConditionVery fine. The barrel retains 50% thin original blue finish, mainly on the breech end, with a smooth brown patina on the balance. The lock and hammer have a smooth dark mottled patina with flashes of original blue finish on the lock. The breechblock retains 50% original case colors with a smooth silver gray patina on the balance. The stock is also very fine with a few minor chips around the lock and overall scattered minor nicks, dings and scratches associated with a gun of this age. The markings and cartouche are crisp and clear. The action is excellent.
